Mapping Kīlauea's magma reservoirs at high resolution
A dense array of 1,815 small seismometers, combined with controlled vibrations from a T-Rex vibroseis truck, gave researchers a high-resolution seismic picture of magma storage beneath Kīlauea's summit. They identified two distinct reservoirs, one under Halemaʻumaʻu crater and one under the south caldera, which may link at greater depth.
