Scientists finally discover how a common gut bacterium can trigger colon cancer

Researchers found that the gut bacterium Bacteroides fragilis toxin BFT attaches to claudin-4 on colon cells before damaging E-cadherin, according to a Nature study from Johns Hopkins. A molecular decoy carrying claudin-4 sequences protected mice from toxin-induced damage, though human testing and cancer prevention remain unproven.
