Yeast paired with electricity can convert CO₂ into a chemical used in biodegradable plastics

Researchers at UFZ and BOKU University combined electrochemical CO2-to-formate conversion with engineered yeast (Komagataella phaffii) in one reactor to make itaconic acid, a bio-based chemical. Yields were lower than with sugar or methanol, but the work shows CO2 can feed complex biochemicals.
