A spider named for Stephen Colbert has a genome about 50% larger than ours

UC Davis researchers sequenced the genome of the Californian trapdoor spider Aptostichus stephencolberti, which has 4.6 billion base pairs and 52 chromosomes, about 50% larger than the human genome. It is the first in its family sequenced, and the data may inform conservation of its threatened coastal dune habitat.
