Knocking out five Hox9–10 genes in zebrafish eliminated the pelvic fins entirely, and disrupting all seven Hox9–10 paralogs in newts produced hindlimb loss in some animals. The genes act before any fin bud appears, at the stage when the progenitor cells that will build the hind appendage are first set up.
