BERKELEY —  The city of Berkeley is moving toward banning the sale of most new gas-powered cars, but not as quickly as first proposed.

The proposal calls for the city to phase out the sale of new gas-powered passenger vehicles, with at least 80% of the cars sold in Berkeley being electric. The change originally was proposed to occur by 2025, then 2027 and now 2030. Councilmember Kate Harrison proposed the latest change at Tuesday night’s meeting, saying she thought a phased approach would be best.
