LIVE OAK — 2:26 p.m.: That’s the time that the call came out, that a deputy was down, that Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller had been shot.

More than a thousand mourners gathered Sunday afternoon in remembrance of 38-year-old Gutzwiller, killed in the line of duty while responding to a call in Ben Lomond Saturday afternoon. Also Sunday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released a statement sharing his condolences, saying Gutzwiller “will be remembered as a hero who devoted his life to protecting the community and as a loving husband and father.”
