Around the young protostar IRAS4A2, astronomers have found "heavy methanol" at roughly 100 times the abundance current chemical models predict, the first unambiguous detection of a quadruply deuterated molecule in space. The excess points to an unknown formation process, and several unidentified spectral lines nearby may belong to other deuterated variants.
