A mapping project analysed almost 44,000 street names across Gauteng and found 57% honour people, turning the region's road network into a sprawling memorial to apartheid-era struggle icons and old colonial figures alike. Townships like Soweto and Cosmo City tell wildly different stories, some named for freedom fighters, others for African cities or, in one case, fish.
