Thursday’s storms, which drenched the Bay Area with its first significant downpour in nearly a month, was just the beginning of what could be a wet and rainy weekend, the National Weather Service said Friday.

Rainfall totals exceeded initial NWS forecasts in Oakland and San Francisco, with each city nearing one inch over a 24-hour period Thursday. San Jose received about a half inch of rain. Most mountains around the region cleared the one-inch mark, while two inches of rain poured in Santa Cruz Mountains.
