STAMFORD — Technology firm Pitney Bowes reported Tuesday slightly lower returns for the past quarter, but company officials said the ongoing growth of their shipping business gave them confidence in the Stamford-based firm’s long-term prospects.

Second-quarter returns totaled about $861 million, down 1 percent year over year. The same period of 2018 had marked what company officials described as Pitney’s best second-quarter performance in the past five years. Reflecting the revenue dip, as well as share buybacks and debt payments, profits declined by about half, to around $24 million.
