Recently, I was asked to present what technology would cause a step-change in the immersive space, in a 2 to 5-year timeframe. ‘Immersive’ is taken here to mean augmented/virtual/mixed realities, commonly regarded as a continuum and grouped under the moniker ‘XR’. Because X is the interchangeable but also to an extent unknown variable, I have chosen to reword the question as ‘what is the X in XR’?
