It was reported in June that Samsung is developing a 3D facial recognition technology for its upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship smartphone. The news has now been corroborated by a patent filing that was approved in late Q2 2018 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

USPTO has approved Samsung’s patent for a biometric camera which can be installed in a device to scan the iris of the user using the smartphone’s front camera. The technology may also support 3D time-of-flight sensor, night-vision camera, proximity sensing, structured light for 3D sensing, eye positioning and gaze tracking camera.
