In a few moments Sunday afternoon, a fundraiser for a mourning family at a Contra Costa County vineyard was beset by even greater tragedy, as a crossing train slammed into a car arriving for the service, killing three women as they drove down a long dirt driveway leading to the event.

Few details emerged Monday of those lost in the crash at a Bloomfield Vineyards property off Orwood Road outside Brentwood, near Bixler Road. It was still not clear what led a car packed with six people to be hit by a train in this rural corner of eastern Contra Coast County, or whether anything could have been done to avoid the gruesome wreck.
