A prominent chain of auto-repair and maintenance shops will pay nearly $4 million in settlement and other fees to resolve a complaint from more than two-dozen California district attorneys, alleging shoddy practices that led to hazardous waste improperly ending up in the trash, alongside non-shredded customer records.

Firestone Complete Auto Care, which operates more than 150 locations in the state, was ordered last week to pay $2.865 million in civil fines plus $350,000 to compensate Santa Clara and Alameda county prosecutors for their multi-year investigation, on top of $725,000 new training and compliance measures in accordance with a settlement. Bridgestone Americas Inc. operates as Firestone in California.
