For most Bay Area residents, the heavy storms that hit Northern California in January are already in the rearview mirror. Grass is green. Reservoirs look full. The sun is shining again.

But in the Santa Cruz Mountains, which absorbed the brunt of several of the most powerful atmospheric river assaults, the damage to roads will be around for months, and in some cases, years.
