“Tom Clancy’s The Division” has become one of the biggest franchises for Ubisoft. The third-person shooter blends elements of an MMO and cover-based shooter masterfully and wraps it in a compelling storyline about a postapocalyptic America hit hard by a deadly virus.

On Thursday, Ubisoft announced it’s expanding that universe with several upcoming projects. The biggest one is a free-to-game called “Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland.” It’s called a standalone project that will come out on PC, consoles and cloud services such Stadia around 2021-2022. The vagueness of the announcement leaves a lot to the imagination. “Heartland” could be any number of things. It could be as the name suggests a free entry of the franchise. Ubisoft could take a cue from the success of games such as “Fortnite” or “Apex Legends” and create a battle royale experience. (The developer already has “Hyper Scape.”) It could be a mix of both and be something comparable to “The Cycle.”
