There’s a reason why most California-grown strawberries bought in the summer taste better than those in the winter: they’re different varieties. But big, sweet, flavorful strawberries will soon be available all year with the recent release of two new varieties that scientists have finally developed after almost a decade of development.

The new varieties, developed by scientists in the Public Strawberry Breeding Program at UC Davis, are called UCD Finn and UCD Mojo. In the last year and a half, the breeding program has released seven new varieties, but Finn and Mojo are the first fall and winter market strawberries in about a decade.
