California workers filed a big increase in first-time unemployment claims last week, a forbidding hint that the state’s economy has yet to recuperate from its coronavirus-spawned ailments.

Workers statewide filed about 86,800 initial claims for unemployment benefits during the week ending on Sept. 25, an increase of 18,000 from the 68,800 first-time claims they filed the week that ended on Sept. 18, the U.S. Labor Department reported Friday.
