California’s program to track firearm owners and disarm convicted criminals and those with specific mental illnesses or who have otherwise been deemed dangerous is the only of its kind in the nation. The system has also gotten pushback due to a lack of resources to keep up with the list of prohibited people.
That could change after California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Wednesday that the California Department of Justice is awarding more than $4.9 million to 10 county sheriff’s departments, including Contra Costa, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz, to support the program, according to a news release.
