Voice-controlled devices can be activated by light, posing a risk to people who are used to uttering “OK, Google” or ordering Siri and Alexa around, researchers have found.

Laser power that’s equivalent to what’s given off by a laser pointer is “sufficient to obtain full control over many popular Alexa and Google smart home devices,” University of Michigan researchers said in a study, conducted with a researcher from the University of Electro-Communications in Japan, released last week. They also were able to hack into the Facebook Portal, plus phones and tablets from Apple, Samsung and Google.
