More than a week after the first evacuation orders prompted by the trio of historic wildfires burning around the Bay Area, some residents got the OK to return home, and there was more on the horizon.

However, that return home could still be a week away or more for those in the most affected areas — and there were still some new evacuation orders being issued north of the Bay Area on Wednesday. By Thursday morning, though, firefighters largely had the three fires under control. Altogether, they had combined to burn more than 800,000 acres, damage or destroy nearly 2,000 structures and force tens of thousands to flee. Six deaths have been attributed to the fires.
