Employers sought to hire 275,000 foreign workers under a new application system for the controversial H-1B visa, the federal government announced Wednesday.

Companies whose “registrations” were selected during an online-submissions period to apply for H-1B visas subject to the annual 85,000 cap may now make official application, and pay $750 or $1,500 per application depending on company size.
