Tesla on Wednesday told employees on its production line that they should continue coming to work, potentially setting the electric carmaker up for a showdown with Alameda County officials over what constitutes an essential work function during the current shelter-in-place edict in effect across seven Bay Area counties that’s aimed at reducing the spread of coronavirus around the region.

In an email sent to Tesla employees Wednesday morning, and obtained by this news organization, Valerie Workman, Tesla’s human relations director said that the company has had “conflicting guidance from different levels of government” about what areas of its operations it will be keeping open at the present time. Workman said Tesla is continuing to operate with only “essential employees” at its factory in Fremont, and that other employees are working from home.
