SAN MATEO — A man who gotten out of his BMW to check on the drivers in a three-car Highway 101 pileup was then hit and killed by another vehicle early Friday morning, authorities said.

Just before 2 a.m., a man driving a blue Scion xB crashed for an unknown reason on southbound 101, just north of 3rd Avenue, said California Highway Patrol Officer Kurtis Waldschmidt. Two more cars — a Ford Explorer and white Mercedes — then hit the Scion in quick succession.
