Turk Schonert, a free spirit who preceded John Elway as Stanford quarterback, died from a reported heart attack on Thursday, according to bengals.com.

Schonert, who played nine seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Falcons after leaving Stanford, died near his South Carolina home, according to the website, two days after his 62nd birthday.
