One of San Jose’s oldest traditions returns Monday with the annual Veterans Day Parade through downtown San Jose. The celebration, of course, originally commemorated the end of World War I in 1918 and a year later became a day of nationwide tribute to those serving — past and present — in our armed forces.

San Jose’s event, organized by the United Veterans Council of Santa Clara County, begins with an 11 a.m. ceremony at Plaza de Cesar Chavez before a procession of nearly 100 units starts marching, rolling and riding its way at noon along Santa Clara Street from Highway 87 east to Market Street. Air Force Maj. Gen. Gregory F. Jones, current commander of the California Air National Guard and a previous commander of the 129th Rescue Wing at Moffett Field, is serving as grand marshal this year.
